Is Desmond Still Alive?

FLASHBACK SCENE: Kelvin: Here's the real question, Desmundo -- do you have the courage to take your finger out of the dam and blow the whole thing up, instead?
Then, at the end of the episode, we see Desmond turning the key that Kelvin told him would blow the whole thing up. Desmond tells Locke to get as far away as possible because he's going to blow the dam. Desmond's thoughts before turning the key are of Penny: All we really need to survive is one person who truly loves us, and you have her. I will wait for you, always...
On the island surface, we see that Claire still cares for Charlie and there is apparently something going on between Jack and Kate.
By the end of the show, we see something that hasn't been seen outside of a flashback scene: the real world outside of the island and Penny is still looking for Desmond!
From this, I think we can gather that the theme of Season 3 will be something called love and the lengths to which one person may go to save the one she loves. Maybe Desmond won't be easy to find. Maybe he's in another dimension (unlikely - but this is LOST), but certainly, somehow, he must be alive. Otherwise, Penny's quest for Desmond would have no chance of success.
If that's not enough to make you think that Desmond is still alive, listen to the May 26 ABC LOST podcast:

Lindelof::Our finales also function a lot... Finale is almost the wrong word for them because in many ways they're usually sort of half-pilot for the season that comes next so it's like there's a lot of set-up so the idea that when Desmond turned that key and we heard that noise and there was this island-wide event where the sky went white. That was really set-up for a lot of the stuff we're doing in Season 3... um and becomes sort of the new central mystery which is exactly what did happen?
Lindelof:The simple answer would be: he blew up the hatch um...
Cuse: or that he blew himself up, but obviously, you know,
Lindelof:(interrupting) I really hope..
Cuse: if you see Penny....
Lindelof: I hope Desmond's coming back.
Cuse: Yeah... It would be really really bad if Desmond was dead.
Lindelof: I would be bummed because after I really invested in him for two hours there you... I have no idea why he went to military prison.
Cuse: and Ian Cusick did an incredible job.
Lindelof: He is an awesome actor.
