There are three characters that I get confused: Richard, Tom, and " Mr. Friendly". Could somebody clear this up for me? A timeline would be good, like first appearance, dead or alive (or somewhere in between), and how the characters figured in with the plot.

Someone just posted a blog about "father" issues, and that was a real good observation. Something else has been on my mind. Did anyone notice that there is a theme with "star-crossed lovers, as in Romeo and Juliet? The biggest one is the Desmond/Penny romance, which even extends over time and space. Then there is the Jack/Sawyer/ Kate triangle. And the Juliet/Ben/ Jack triangle. And, of course, Ben saying "Juliet you are mine". And Ben lost a love that Juliet reminds him of. Hurley finally connects with someone, and she dies. Claire and Charlie connect, and he dies. Rose was terminally ill, and was almost lost to her husband ( forgot his name). Jin and Sun--need I say more?

It's almost as if the island can sense a character is weak with emotion (love, fear, anger, etc.) and that character is doomed to a life of unrequited love or even death. Of course in all classic books and films the main lovers rarely end up "happily ever after."

    Star-crossed lovers

So true. If love came easily it sure would not make much of a plot.

I can't help wishing that at least some of the above will finally be happy and be with their love.

The show IS called "Lost" for many reasons. The flashforwards prove that at least 6 people ( I'm not
including Aaron, sorry ABC) do not have very happy lives
off the island. And Jack desperately wants to go back ...
perhaps to be with his true love, Juliet? Since Kate appears
to love only Aaron, Jack must fix what is wrong in his life.
Ah, the things we do for love.

You are of course forgetting another love triangle...Jack/Kate/Juliet. BTW Jack's true love is Kate, not Juliet - as we now know since seeing them together in another flash forward.

I still can't understand why Jack is in such a state of
anguish when Kate and the baby are involved. Something tells me that these flashforwards are NOT what they seem
in relation to "island time." Guess we have to wait....
