Well Jack finally grew a pair when he pushed Flock off the pier into the water.
This was a simple but very powerful scene showing that eventhough Jack knows how incredibly dangerous and menacing Flock/MIB can be, he still had the nads to have a physical confrontation with him {albiet just a shove}.
This scene set the stage for everyone to start banning against who everybody now knows {even Clair} is a very bad person {or thing}.
Jack and Saywer are pissed and Flock is going down.

What is this Island

This is my take {theory} on what the Island is.
A few thousand years ago, an alien space craft landed {or crashed} on what is now the Island {but a few thousand years ago the location was actually at or near where Egyptian folk roamed}.
The alien craft was capable of time journeys {hence being able to travel the universe}.
The Egyptians conversed/communicated with the aliens as though they {the aliens} were Gods.
The Egyptians were privy to the knowledge of the dynamics of the universal time traveling ship of the aliens {or Gods as they wouldv'e thought them to be}.
This would explain how in "real life" egyptologists found a buried wooden ship next to the great pyrimids and that wriiten scrolls tell us that they put it there as a "celestial traveling vessle" whereas the buried pharaoh would be able to travel to the "gods" after death.
So, back to the Island, --- once the Egyptians learned of the aliens and reveared them as Gods, --they built that 4 toed statue in the image of the alien race {what they considered Gods}
{Will be interesting to see if the face of the statue is of a dog or a jackle {hence either Anubis or Ceribus}.
The volcano eventually erupted and covered the spacecraft,-- and the wheel that Ben and Locke turns to move the Island around is actually the buried space craft and it's universal time traveling capability.
The Darma people found this buried craft and figured out how to use it.
This of coarse does not explain who is who and why things are happening now but it's my theroy of the premise of what the Island actually is.
Oh, and OLD SMOKEY, --just think Ceribus, -- the Egyptian dog headed guardian of the "underworld".
