I believe that the island is located in an area of the world that is similar to that of the Bermuda Triangle. By this I mean that the location is unknown to mostly everyone, but that doesn't mean it does not exist or that only a few people would know about it. The Bermuda Triangle is used to explain the unknown disappearance of airplanes, boats, and other crafts. Perhaps at certain coordinates, if a ship or plane enters just at the right coordinates then it slips into this different dimension...
